  • using NETA's CET Examination Guide, which contains the "need-to-know" for certification specialty areas. The Guide is sent after receipt of your application fee, or may be purchased separately.
  • attending technical content and train-the-trainer workshops and seminars offered by state Environmental Training Centers, universities and colleges, the EPA, OSHA, and the private sector throughout the nation.


CERTIFIED ENVIRONMENTAL TRAINER® (CET) requirements are...

  • proof of six (6) eligibility units, acquired through education and experience. At least three units (three years) must be direct experience in a relevant technical field.
  • a minimum of 270 contact hours in delivering education or training.
  • three professional references attesting to the applicant's skill as a trainer.
  • successful completion of the CET Instructional Technology test and one or more technical specialty tests.*
  • renewal every three years by proof of continuing education and experience in instructional technology and technical areas.


* Recognition is provided, in lieu of examination, to holders of current CHMM, CHP, CHST, CIH, CSP, and OHST certification, NRRPT registration, and most state senior-level water and wastewater certification. Details are provided with the application package.
ASSOCIATE ENVIRONMENTAL TRAINER (AET) affiliation...

  • Is available for trainers who do not yet have the experience or training contact hours needed for certification.
  • Demonstrates commitment to the standards of excellence and professionalism of the CET Program.
  • Provides many of the personal and professional benefits of certification while you are still gaining needed experience.
  • Requires proof of three eligibility units; of which one year must be experience in a relevant technical area.
  • Requires 45 contact hours in education or training delivery, three references, and successful completion of the examination.
